A New Englander through and through, I grew up here in Sunapee, New Hampshire. I’m a ceramicist who spends my summers as a landscaper, so naturally, in both lines of work my hands are my greatest tools. To me, there’s no real distinction between the soil in the garden and the clay on my wheel. They are one and the same. Whether I’m moving the earth by the truckload in the garden, or by the handful in the studio, the conversation is always about listening to the earth and staying curious about what I can help shape it into.
I think of my work as a form of world-building, and my studio has become a place where all my obsessions can grow together harmoniously and freely. Through my pottery, I can take inspiration from the ripe fruits that grow at the local farms near me, the wildflowers and landscape plants I find gardening and hiking in the White Mountains, the ornate and ancient, ceremonial vessels I encounter in my travels, and even nostalgic forms from video games.
In addition to traveling, learning languages, spending time with friends and family, and eating great food, what I find makes me most happy is simply creating and cultivating beauty in whatever ways I can, and I think that sentiment, especially, is baked into the clay. My work isn’t just meant to sit on a shelf; it’s an invitation to bring a sense of grounded wonder into your home.
